Brown Rat (Photo: Laurie Campbell)
You don’t often see them, but rats are quite common near the machair. They have even spread to the machair of the offshore islands. This can be a problem for the seabirds that nest there, as the rats eat their eggs and chicks.
The brown rat is also called the Norwegian rat, and can be found all over the world, except in Antarctica, as they travel with humans.
