Kidney Vetch

The shape of this flower gives it its name – the two oval parts look a bit like a kidney. This was thought to show that it was good for curing kidney problems!

It is common on the machair and often found in a tangle of all different kinds of flowers. In the picture above you can see it with buttercup and daisy.

It is a strange-looking flower when you look closely at it. The flowers are on a cushion of white, wooly hairs. In the same flower head, there can be some flowers that are just about to open, and some that are already brown and dying.

Bumblebees love them and they are often found buzzing around the kidney vetch.
