Primrose means ‘first rose’ and it is called this as it is one of the first flowers to bloom. In Harris, it flowers very quickly in spring once sheep have been moved out of a field. Anywhere that sheep can’t get to, you will see primroses in flower.

There are two types of flower on each plant – see if you can find both types next time you see a primrose.

Primrose was used in lots of medicines, and you can still find it in cough mixtures. The flowers are good to eat – try adding them to a green salad!
