This is one of the most common of all European plants. It grows in lots of places, and grows well even where it is trampled or the grass cut by a mower.

You can have a go at firing the flower spikes by looping and pulling on the wiry stems.

The flowers are brownish, but have large white stamens sticking out. If you look from the top it looks a bit like a hat with a wide brim!

It was once thought that it could be used by girls to find a husband – they would put the plantain under their pillow and if there were flowers on it in the morning then they would get a husband!
