Rock pipit (Photo: Laurie Campbell)
The rock pipit lives, as its name suggests, on rocky shores. It hops, walks and runs as it looks for food amongst the rocks and boulders.
It is larger and darker than its cousin, the meadow pipit. But it has a similar song flight to the meadow pipit – it flies up high then ‘parachutes’ down on half-open wings whilst making a ‘pseep pseep ‘sound.
It nests amongst rocks and in crevices on the rocky shore.
