This is an unusual flower – the dark violet flowers are arranged in a dense spiral on a pair of bright green leaves.

It is common on the machair and coastal areas.

The upper lip of the flowers is supposed to look like a sickle. So according to legend, it heals the wounds from sickles (used to cut grass). This is where the name selfheal comes from.
