These small crustaceans have a small squat body and very long claws. They are usually found on sandy or muddy seabeds with rock outcrops or boulders which provide hiding places for them. There are several different species, some of which are very brightly coloured.

A long clawed squat lobster at the mouth of its burrow, If alarmed it will use its poweful tail to flip itself backwards out of harm's way

A closeup of a different squat lobster species. This animal is bright red with blue stripes, and its claws are covered in hairs.
